NORML.ORG US: Top Court Takes ‘Bong Hits’ Case on Free Speech
The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a free-speech case from Alaska known as the “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” dispute, in which a high school principal suspended a student for displaying that phrase on a banner.
The case, which hinges on the extent free-speech rights are afforded to students, drew national interest after former Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth Starr took the case in August.
Why is this a government issue? A) This should not have left the Principal’s office at the school in question, B) This should not be a question of whether or not the shirt promoted drug use. In my opinion, the shirt delivered a paradoxical joke promoting political and religious dissidence. Like most free speech issues, I’m just surprised it’s managed to get this far.
The issues surrounding aside, I think high school students should be afforded as many free speech rights as possible, even if you think they’re doing the wrong thing.
