In a turn of events I never imagined or even dreamed of, Tommy Chong came to Vancouver yesterday to do a book signing for his new book, The I Chong: Meditations from the Joint. I bought this book probably about a month ago when I was in Halifax, and finished it over the course of a week during poop sessions which were probably extended due to not wanting to put it down. Anyone who hasn’t yet bought and read it, I can’t recommend it enough. The way this kind, humble man was set up by the DEA and sent to prison essentially for making the police and the DEA look like complete morons in his films during the 70s is appalling and just makes me want to rise up, and like Howard Stern said, I too feel guilt for not protesting in the streets the day he was sentenced (not like it would’ve made a lick of difference). However, the Nixon administration was openly against the Cheech and Chong films and records in the 70s, and the Republicans have an elephant as their logo for a good reason - they never forget.
When Tommy Chong walks into a room, he lights it up. Okay, not so much in a pot sense, but in general. The man has a very dedicated following of very diverse people, and I was lucky to be fourth in line at his book signing. Interestingly though, while I’m sure everyone there either smokes or has smoked cannabis, there were really only about four people you could tell just by looking at them out of about 100 when I left. It just proves that the War on Drugs is no longer just a war on counterculture. It’s a war on people.
